Girly book club

Nova Scotia Book Clubs

We are the Girly Book Club: a group of 10-12 women aged 30 and up living in the Halifax area who meet once every six weeks or so to discuss books, arts and life. We have been around since 2007. We take turns hosting in our homes. We meet in the evenings – lately on Tuesdays (although this is flexible as we try to pick the evening that works best for our members' schedules).

In the beginning we read fiction with a feminist slant but these days we try to read from a wide variety of genres including classic; contemporary; prize-winning fiction; self-discovery; graphic novels; science fiction and more.

Some examples of books we have read include:

  • Fledgling by Octavia Butler
  • What we all Long for by Dionne Brand
  • Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
  • Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
  • Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
  • Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden
  • The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
  • The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill
  • Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet by Ann Marie Macdonald
  • Moons of Jupiter by Alice Munro
  • The Watchmen by Alan Moore
  • Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
  • Point Omega by Don Delillo
  • The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte
  • Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
  • Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D.H. Lawrence

Next up on our literary horizons:

  • Bride of New France by Suzanne Desrochers
  • The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver
  • My Secret Garden by Nancy Friday

We are always interested in diversifying our membership and welcome new members who can commit to reading the books and attending regularly. Currently we are seeking 1-2 new members. Please email if you are interested in joining.
